At The Moment (2021)

Material: Ceramic, Wood
Size: 9 x 3.3 ft

Touch starvation is a consequence of the pandemic. Since COVID-19 entered our lives, lockdown and isolation have forced most of us to work and study remotely through electronic devices. The screen and the keyboard have become the primary communication objects that have allowed us to communicate within different places simultaneously.

This exhibition is a product of our present moment, a touchless environment in a physical world. I use the rectangular shape to mimic the screen to present our current tedious moment of staring at zoom and not having a face-to-face conversation. Throughout history, clay has been used to keep records, count, utensils, and functional objects. I use clay to decorate space and accentuate architecture as well as to pass the time. Tapping the soft clay, just like a keyboard, results in a highly textured and imprinted surface to create a visual and material record of time passing.

Covid-19 notified us to observe six feet of social distancing that reduces the risk of infection. Six feet is the distance between humans through electronics and the space between the bench and my piece, by enlarging the "Enter" key from a keyboard and functioning as a stool, inviting the audience to experience an empty and isolating moment.
